About Metro Connection

Since 1995 WAMU has been serving its listeners with the only local news magazine airing in the Washington radio market. The award-winning Metro Connection is produced by the WAMU news room with the same attention to detail and technical standards as NPR's weekly news magazines. Instead of a national perspective, the subject is our city... our local communities... our backyards. Airing immediately after The DC Politics Hour, Metro Connection broadens the focus from city government to include news and features from the District, Virginia and Maryland. The program also highlights upcoming arts events, tells the history of our neighborhoods and offers live, in-studio performances from local bands worthy of attention - bands that have no other radio outlets in the region.

Metro Connection strives to be "on-location" and out of the studio as much as possible. From a story about re-seeding oysters in the Chesapeake Bay... to a series following a woman through her first year as a teacher in the DC school system... to a feature about the tradition of street vendors in Baltimore - we get around.

This is not sound-bite radio. Metro Connection allows our reporters to go further with a story... and encourages them to produce the type of in-depth, sound-rich news features that public radio listeners have come to expect and demand. We strive to bring a greater understanding and appreciation of the Washington region to our audience every week. And when we ask for feedback from our audience, we get a great response. The show's theme music was written and performed by Metro Connection listeners... and was chosen during an on-air contest that inspired many listener entries.

From the news of the day, to investigative pieces that exist outside the daily news cycle, to human interest features on people and places in our community... we aim to produce the show at the highest levels of public radio standards.
